One Page or Two? How to Decide the Length of Your Resume
Length is not a rule. It is a result of how much relevant evidence you have.
The short answer
If you are a student, a fresher or have under about five years of relevant experience, aim for one page. With a longer career, a large number of relevant projects, or a role that expects publications and detail, two pages is normal. More than two pages for a standard corporate resume is rarely justified. Academic or research CVs are a different document and can be much longer; see CV vs resume in India.
The reason is the reader, not a rule: someone reviewing many applications decides quickly whether to read on. A resume that puts the most relevant evidence on the first page respects that.
A quick guide
| Your situation | Usual length | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Student or fresher | 1 page | Education, projects, internships, skills, one or two achievements |
| 1 to 5 years of experience | 1 page | Experience first, short education, key skills and projects |
| 5 to 10 years | 1 to 2 pages | Recent roles in detail, older roles in a line or two |
| Senior, managerial | 2 pages | Scope, team size, results; skip early roles that no longer matter |
| Academic or research | CV, as long as needed | Publications, teaching, grants, presentations |
If you are a little over a page
Do these in order. Stop as soon as the content fits comfortably.
- Cut duplicated content. Remove a bullet that repeats another, and merge short roles.
- Cut the oldest and least relevant. A summer job from eight years ago rarely helps.
- Shorten bullets to one line each where the detail is not essential.
- Tighten spacing. In the ApplyReady builder's Design tab, choose the Compact spacing density, or the Compact 10 pt base font size (the other sizes are 11 and 12 pt). Going from 11 to 10 points is usually acceptable on a printed page; going smaller than 10 hurts readability.
- Adjust margins last. Very thin margins make a page look crowded and can be cut off by some printers.
If you are well under a page
A resume with a half-empty page is fine, as long as the content is solid. If you want to add substance rather than padding:
- Add one or two projects with real results. See fresher resume examples by role.
- Add relevant coursework, certifications or tool experience.
- Add volunteer or leadership work if it shows responsibility.
- Do not add a long objective statement or personal details such as a photograph, religion or full address, unless the employer asks.
Watch the page break
If your resume runs just over one page, the problem is usually one stray line on page two. That looks careless. Either trim a line or two so the resume fits, or add enough content that page two is a proper half page. The builder's preview shows exactly where the page ends and tells you how many PDF pages the export will have, so you can fix it before downloading.
Frequently asked questions
Is a two-page resume bad for a fresher?
It is not forbidden, but there is rarely enough relevant material to fill two pages. If you are spilling over, trim older or weaker items first.
Do government job applications need a longer resume?
Many government forms are filled online and ask for details in fields, with uploads only for documents. Where a resume is requested, follow the notice for length and format.
Does font size matter?
Yes. Below 10 points, text becomes hard to read on paper and on a phone. Prefer 10 to 11 points for body text and keep headings clear.
What about margins?
Keep them even and not too narrow. Very small margins can be cut off by printers and make a page feel crowded.
Should I put a photograph on my resume?
In India, unless the employer asks for one, it is generally left out. Photos can distract screening software and add no information about skills.
